In The Imperfect Ability of the Womb in the Telephone to the Beyond, I thought about an exaggerated giantess—symbolizing maternal presence and protection—by doubling my height. Participants sat on a small child’s chair beside me, heightening the surreal contrast, as I whispered secret, tender, and absurd messages to them through a playful telephone tube.
This work was done in response to feedback labeling my work as unhinged. In pursuit of never conforming to my own patterns, this piece embraced quiet, intentional, and reciprocal interactions. Some people laughed, and some engaged, more deeply wanting to tell me secrets in return. Each connection was so personal and sincere.
The performance drew from Nietzsche’s critique on metaphysical pursuits, and Avital Ronell’s reflections on themes of origin and communication. This shared vulnerability and sincerity was a potent tonal shift and reminded me of art’s gravity.
