As an American citizen living in Shanghai, China, I created a live performance in response to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States. People in Shanghai—expats, international residents, and local Chinese citizens—would often share their views about the U.S. with me, offering their thoughts, questions, and opinions. Instead of keeping those conversations between us, I decided to act as a conduit, giving them the opportunity to voice their perspectives directly.
For this performance, I facilitated a live phone call from Shanghai to the United States, amplifying their words through speakers at the 21C Museum in Bentonville during the Inverse Performance Art Festival. Their voices, unfiltered and unscripted, were heard in real time by the museum audience. This setup allowed participants in Shanghai to bypass me entirely and speak directly to people in the U.S., fostering an open, immediate dialogue that felt raw and direct.
